چکیده

We compute the structure of stars of mass M 0:5M starting from the pre{main sequence and employing diierent assumptions on the convection model, in particular dropping the Mixing Length Theory (MLT) and adopting a Full Spectrum of Turbulence (FST) mod-elization (Canuto and Mazzitelli 1991, Canuto, Goldman and Mazzitelli 1996). In the FST framework, convection in the upper stellar envelope can be so ineecient that there is a thin superadiabatic layer. The resulting T ee may diier up to 200K, according to the detailed treatment of the convection model, a result which can not be found by changing the l=H P value in the MLT models within acceptable values. It results important to introduce the FST treatment of convection also in the model atmospheres, which are necessary to full understanding of the observational characteristics of low mass stars.

Numerical Study of the Mass Transfer Effects on the Flow and Thermal Fields Structures under the Influence of Natural Convection

In this paper, a numerical study has been carried out for coupled mass, momentum and heat transfer in the field under effects of natural convection. For this purpose, the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the terms of the Buoyancy forces (due to temperature gradients), energy conservation and concentration (mass) transfer equations have been simultaneously solved using approp...

A&a Manuscript No. Seismic Properties of the Sun's Superadiabatic Layer I. Theoretical Modelling and Parametrization of the Uncertainties

Some alternatives to the traditional mixing-length theory (MLT) have recently been proposed for modelling convective heat transport inside stars. The ideal formulation is one that does not involve any free parameters. However, in our present state of ignorance we still need at least one free parameter in order to build solar models with the correct radius. Having adjusted this parameter (e.g. t...

Stellar Envelope Convection calibrated by Radiation Hydrodynamics Simulations: Influence on Globular Cluster Isochrones

One of the largest sources of uncertainty in the computation of globular cluster isochrones and hence in the age determination of globular clusters is the lack of a rigorous description of convection. Therefore, we calibrated the superadiabatic temperature gradient in the envelope of metal-poor low-mass stars according to the results from a new grid of 2D hydrodynamical models, which cover the ...

Seismic constraints on open clusters

The aim of this theoretical and modelling paper is to derive knowledge on the global and structural parameters of low-mass stars using asteroseismology and taking advantage of the stellar collective behavior within open clusters. We build stellar models and compute the seismic signal expected from main sequence objects in the 0. 8 − 1. 6M ⊙ range. We first evaluate apparent magnitudes and oscil...

Penetrative Convection within the Anelastic Approximation

We present a method for studying penetrative convection within the anelastic approximation. This method is then applied to two-dimensional numerical simulations of a convective region bounded below by a stable (radiative) region. Descending plumes penetrate into the stable layer, exciting gravity waves with a spectrum of frequencies limited by the ‘‘Brunt-Väisäla’’ frequency. The depth of penet...
